A masterpiece (well for me at least).  I loved Chris Anderson’s follow up to The Long Tail.  A lot of people are making money off of free according to Anderson.  There are countless examples, including piracy, Flickr, Second Life, and others.   It no longer is a trend.  ”Freemium” business models are everywhere online.   Try our product out, have the scaled down version, then an inticement to become paid.

This book prooves that many things are becoming too cheap to meter (storage space for example).  Critics will say that free isn’t a business model but it’s obvious  websites like Facebook (where I’ve never spent a dollar) are proliferating.  Web 2.0 has ushered in a new economy of free models and I’m actually building my own.  This book really resonated me.  It made me think of how many models exist in the marketplace where there is no option other than to upfront (think foreclosure websites).   “Free” dives deeper than that though as it gets into many of the virtual words (World of Warcraft, WebKinz).

It might be debated if Sun Tzu was truly a historical figure or not but The Art of War is definitely a valuable read.  It was one of the tougher books that I’ve read this year although the Kindle edition certainly offered plenty of footnotes and explanations.  The version I read spent probably 1/3 of the time talking about the quality of translation and accuracy.  Sun Tzu is believed to have been a general under King of Wu who lived between 544-496 BC.

The Art of War is a an ancient Chinese book on military strategy but is often adapted for business.  Sun Tzu was a supposed master of military tactics and offers 13 chapters focused on warfare.   The teachings in these chapters focuses on (at the time) advanced tactics of strategy and position versus war by typical means at the time.   It is arguably the most successful book in military strategy history.

One of my biggest takeaways are the continued references to swift battle and attack versus long planned out sieges.  I found this very interesting.  In fact one of the quotes is something like, “We will attack the enemy, defeat them, and dine together tonight.”    There are many references to attacking swiftly.  I believe the same principles apply in business.   Ideas need to quickly be tested.

The principles in The Art of War are too numerous to count.  Being an entrepreneur there are many useful takeaways because starting a business seems much like waging a war or battle .

First printed in 1921, this book tells the story of a person with the odds stacked against him perserveres through an impossible test.

Peter B. Kyne wrote a timeless tale of resolve, determination, and persistance.  These traits seem to be natural to many people who are at a disavantage when it comes to resume` strength.

I personally know a few people I would consider “Go-Getters” and the burning desire for success seems unquenchable to them.   My former boss/mentor first had myself and my peers read this book about 10 years ago.  I thought it was worth another read in 2009.  Although the lingo is a bit archaic, the book is well worth your time.

Lastly it’s a short read so you can read this in one good sitting.

I received this book from Seth Godin who offered it up to his blog subscribers and asked us to write a review and pass it on.  Although I hadn’t heard of the book, Seth mentioned it was the memoirs of the founder of the Acumen Fund, Janine Novogratz.

Godin is a huge supporter of Acumen and the last seminar of his I attended, the entire $2500 gate fee went to Acumen.

I can sum this book up in one word; “touching”.  The book tells Novogratz’s story from bootstrapping a microfinance lending organization to the Rwanda genocide, to starting the Acumen Fund.   I was blown away by the Rwanda story and saw a side of it the media wouldn’t touch.  I learned a lot about micropreneurs in 3rd developing nations.  That resonated with me.  After doing a few home stays in Panama and spending time in Brazil, I knew the potential impact of financial aid but learned what a profound impact helping local entrepreneurs could have.

This book will make you rethink what is possible as an entrepreneur.
