I set out to do some aggressive things in 2009. As I hit age 30, I felt my life change a lot. Now married for a year and 2 years into my online real estate investment company, I knew it was time to plan for the long term. I had made good money, always donated to my church (what I would consider insufficient for my income bracket), and donated furniture, clothes, and other things I didn’t need.

I realized it was time to step it up. I’ve decided to donate and save a lot more in 2009. I decided to donate 20 cents from every dollar I earn. Now that may seem like huge mountain to climb, and it is. I live a good life like most. I enjoy dining, traveling, and consuming like the average American. Trouble is the average American can’t donate 20 cents. I knew this would require a change in mindset. In addition to just giving $, my goal is to give time.

I’ve considered setting up a non-profit to do all of these things. In fact one of my goals since I’m into technology is donate both time and money to the “One Laptop Per Child” organization. I realized that if I can touch people with something that is dear to me that I will be more likely to give. Additionally, visiting the countries and the schools where the laptops are going is going to be part of my goal too. I’ve chosen Brazil as the country where I’m going to be sending computers.

Partially I chose Brazil because I had my honeymoon there and am taking Portuguese lessons. I love Brazil. However Brazil has extreme poverty.  So creating an opportunity for children to access technology to me has an impact that resonates with me.   This will be part of what I’m doing with my donation dollars and time this year.   Others will be my church and some local organizations here in Memphis.

The point I’m making is this:   Donate your hard earned dollars and precious time that means something to you.   I believe by making that connection you can visualize the goal much easier and reach it.
